LEAN workflows throughout the company

With around 300 employees, HydraSpecma is a well-regarded Danish supplier specializing in industry, wind, and offshore components. Over the years, the company has expanded into three buildings, each following a strong LEAN philosophy in daily operations.

But growing new challenges from years of expanding, trash management became inefficient, as materials had to be gathered in cages throughout the 3 building facility and trucked to an outside collection zone.

GPS Tracking of Value Streams

With the help of GPS technology, Mil-tek carried out a value stream mapping review of Hydra’s internal trash management. The data revealed that the trash cart traveled close to 50 km a week and exited the factory buildings roughly 30 times per day. In addition, workers spent around 8 hours per week at the outdoor compactor, manually loading trash from cages into the machine.

In the unpacking section, certain cages positioned closer to the outdoor trash facility were pushed out by hand, unloaded piece by piece, and then returned empty. This repetitive and inefficient routine placed extra strain on staff, which Hydra recognized as unsustainable and wanted improve.

Moving Forward at the Right Path

Hydra responded with a highly proactive mindset, determined to turn the issue around and cut down on all the outdoor trash hauling.

They envisioned a system of localized trash collection zones instead of one central disposal point. Alongside this, they showed a strong commitment to boosting their environmental performance and making sure recycling rates reached their full potential.
