Platinum Validation for Zero Waste to Landfill
ABB is a worldwide technology provider offering a wide portfolio covering everything from power grids and automation solutions to industrial robots and electrical components
Among its facilities, the Frosinone plant in Italy is critical to ABB’s Mission to Zero – a strategy to achieve carbon neutrality worldwide by 2030.
In order to succeed, they needed to rethink trash management. So they partnered with Mil-tek!
The partnership led to ABB Frosinone earning Platinum-level UL 2799A Environmental Claim Validation for Zero Waste. Platinum status is only awarded when a facility diverts 100% of its trash from landfill.
Here’s how the transformation was happened…

Lean strategy, improves management, and compaction integration
Mil-tek conducted an value stream mapping at ABB Frosinone to monitor production steps and operator movement.
The results highlighted that trash trucks covered approximately 6835 miles annually inside the facility just to manage disposal.
Based on the results, ABB Frosinone streamlined its trash management by applying a Lean compaction strategy, installing Mil-tek balers, and adopting more efficient handling practices overall.
Today, truck mileage has dropped to about 1367 miles per year – an 80% decrease!

Effortless installation with great benefits
At ABB, Mil-tek installed several pneumatic balers along the production line. By reducing trash streams such as cardboard and plastic by up to 90%, they minimized the need for frequent trips to outside bins.
Since the Pneumatic balers don’t use hydraulics or electricity, they were quickly installed on the production line and run efficiently on the factory’s compressed air supply.
The improvements for ABB include:- waste handling is leaner
– streamlined trash management
– forklift use reduced by 80%
– minimizing accident risks
– lowering the number of outside containers
– time saved for higher-value activities
– and much more…
